Shade Compositions

Rashaad Newsome (b. 1979) utilizes culture for contemporary art performance. Here  is an excerpt of a "Shade Composition". Very interesting. I first saw his work exploring the use of Vogue and Ballroom dancing. Here is is website: http://rashaadnewsome.com/ BTW he is probably not the first to bring ballroom culture into the "white box". Trajal Harrell has been using Ballroom culture too: http://betatrajal.org/home.html Robert Tyree introduced me to his work. Enjoy the delightful performance documents! -AK

House: "The Idea Came From My Mom"

The story continues. This video is from 2008. What is "House"? Juan Atkins always thought it meant music made "in-house" by the DJ. Turns out this might very well be it. Rroy claims in this interesting video how he invented the term "House". It makes more sense compared to the other explanations. I've heard corroborating evidence in an interview with an early House DJ (Chip E I think) said Rroy came up to him at a party and said more or less "I have something that is gonna be the next hot thing and separate me from all the other DJs, It's called House."
